What is .NET?

.NET (dotNet) is, briefly stated, the idea and the vision about the ability to develop software, which is capable of connecting information, people, systems and objects with each other by means of shared and universal technology.

In practical terms, this means the vision of creating a shared standardized method of storing a certain amount of information and data. To be able to store and forward ones data is not a new requirement, and tests to standardize this process have been tried several times e.g. by means of EDI/EDIFAKT standards etc., which are used by many companies today. With the development of Extensible Markup Language (XML) we now have the possibility to store a given amount of information and data via a shared standardized method. The advantage of XML is the possibility to store data through structured metadata. Metadata is data-about-data and whereby, together with its data, a means of storing the description of the data's structure.

.NET Web service
With XML it becomes very attractive not only to exchange data between applications, but also to make them interconnect, even if they are made in different programming languages or in different operating systems. The idea of distributed applications is not new, but before it was too time-consuming and consequently became unprofitable.

Briefly, with .NET Web services you have the possibility to involve the functionality from any other place in the world by sending a XML document, which e.g. enters and makes use of the search machine Google by means of a XML request. Google responds with the search result via XML directly into your business solution. Alternatively you would have had to create your own search machine and incorporate it into the business solution of your customer.
